Musical Instruments on Air Lines
The carriage of musical instruments on Qantas operated services is governed by the policy below.
Small instruments such as flute, violin, violas, and saxophone may be carried in the aircraft cabin as carry-on baggage; Qantas allows the carriage of musical instruments as described below in the overhead locker onboard Qantas aircraft. Both the instrument and its case must not exceed a total of 130 centimetres (51 inches) and 7 kgs (15 lbs) of weight.
The carriage of musical instruments exceeding the dimensions of the test unit (see Carry-on Baggage Allowances) is subject to space availability within the overhead locker. If your musical instrument meets the above requirements, but we reasonably believe that it is not safe for your baggage to be carried as Carry-on Baggage, we will require you to check it in. When the instrument and its case exceed the test unit dimensions, it will be considered as the equivalent of a 1 x 115cm (45in) bag or 1 x 105cm (41in) bag for travel on Dash 8 aircraft types.
We recommend arriving promptly to board your flight to ensure you can secure your Instrument and its case safely in an overhead locker. All baggage is subject to Security and Safety screening. Visit the Australian Government TravelSECURE website for more information.
All other musical instruments that exceed allowable dimensions are considered a 'bulky item'. You will need to purchase an extra seat if you wish for the item to travel in the cabin.
